I believe I used a 3/4 or 1 inch hole approximately. I use Leather 5/16" tree saver taps with them. If you've got time/energy, you might consider drilling the hole in the PVC and then elongating the top of it slightly so that the PVC won't blow off the tap in windy conditions. I didn't do that and I end up leaving a small amount of sap in every bag to keep them from blowing around too much.

i just drilled 1 inch holes and then took dremmel tool and notched top it took less than ten minutes to do fifety and it almost snaps right in /i used black plastic health spouts and cut dropper off to fit over hole worked good. now i hope plastic tap wont break from weight of sap but they are very tight to tree .

the holders i made are four inches long i set two blades together on table saw and made jig to cut 1/8 " deep and just role pipe both ends then cut at 4" and start over 30 to a ten foot piece then drilled 1" hole with hole saw not drill bit when drill bit catches pipe shatters.then i took dremmel tool and put 1/2" notch on top of hole and it fits nice and snug may have to dremmel bigger hole for bigger taps. then just zip tie bags on 11"zip ties. i used plastic taps hope they hold up to weight of sap. holder in picture is not dremmeled for notch yet finished ones are operation.55575558

Great idea I will have to give this a try next year. Anything that will save me from washing buckets or tubing would be great. Thanks for sharing.

I bought a uni-bit or step driil to drill the 3/4 inch hole it is easier on the pvc keeps it from breaking. we have a router set upside down with a 3/8 bit to do the groove and the notch in the 3/4 hole. we also put the pvc to one side of the bag not in the middle it makes for faster pouring. just finished putting bags on last nigh now lets hope the sap flows here?

We do leave the tops open doesnt seem to be a big deal. As for zip straps go to www.electricalbasics.com go to the standard cable ties the 11inch uv resisitant 27.80 for 1000 of them. i bought 2 1000 count bags and with shipping it ends up being about 3 1/2 cents each. i work for a heating contractor and our suppliers were 7 cents each.

I cut the bottom off a 16oz pop bottle and put that over the top for a cover. It was cheap and worked well.
do you leave the top of the PVC open?
