Sap Turning Yellow

We tapped in traverse city 2 weeks ago and we already have about 10 trees producing yellow sap. its only March 1st is this going to be a short year?

If it has a yellowish hue is it still ok to boil?

it might have a higher sugar content or the tree is just flushing itself i've seen it before and it was fine

We tapped two weeks ago. We collect sap from three locations about 3 miles apart and there are trees from each location producing yellow sap... it has gotten worse the last 4 days.

I get yellow-tinted sap after it rains - using buckets. It dripped off the sides of the trees. Had to throw away the sap.

if yuo are using buckets, rain will wash junk off the tree and into your buckets turning the sap yellowish

Agree. I have had several buckets of yellow sap from the runoff/snow melt on the trees. I had to dump over 5 gallons because I was concerned it was 'too' yellow. Some that had just a tint of yellow I kept. Boiled fine and tasted good. I'm sure mixing 10 gallons of slightly yellow sap with 100's of clear sap won't hurt... just a bit longer boiling.

We're still getting nice sap in Ludington. We tapped the second week of February. We'll see what this week brings with the warm weather.
