View Full Version : packing 5 gal plastic tanks

i wanted to try packing some syrup in bulk this year so bought some of the blue plastic 5 gal containers from bascom. my question is should i wait untill my canner has at least 5 gal in it so i pack the 5 gal all together, or can i do say 2.5 gal one day and finnish filling another. Or could i use the 5 gal container as storage until there's 5 gal and than reheat it in the canner and pack.

I think you'll have less chance of spoilage, mold, etc if it's packed hot all at once to the container's capacity. I'd follow the same principles as packing smaller jars and bottles.

Just so you know those containers hold more than 5 gallons, so you might want to weigh them so you know just how much you made.

I experimented with partial packing last year and was not happy with the result. Packing them full in one canning worked best.

Partial packing did not work well for me last season. Had to skim off the nasty reboil and repack it.

Glad i dug into old post got my answer i was gonna ask now to figure how i will hold 40 gallons till i get enought to fill drum. lol i may need to buy some 5 gal containers to hold syrup in untill i have 40 gallons of finish product

I don't pack anything larger than 5 gallons, but I've heard that you can pack the stainless barrels in increments and not have spoilage. Someone with more know-how on this will hopefully weigh in.
