Hello all, have been lurking for a few weeks after discovering the site while googling for info. Brought in my first bucket of sap yesterday and took a photo and realized I ought to sign up for the madness.

We have 75 acres in Waldo County Maine that was aggresively logged 25 yrs ago. Nicely sloped for gravity feed. Never even thought to do this until a forester we used pointed it out. Now it's part of my retirement plan and I actively daylight the best trees while cutting firewood. Hopefully I have at least another 30 yrs on this earth and can make it a part of our bigger picture of self sustenance.

welcome to maple madness. you should have plenty of dead wood laying around to get rid of that propane fired turkey fryer. My cousin needed $40 worth of propane to make a gallon of syrup. Throw a few cinder blocks on the gravel, put some pans over it and build a fire under it and it will outperform a turkey fryer. Go to the Homemade Maple Equipment for some ideas.

Agreed, must move to wood fired boiling. I can only burn so much firewood to heat the house. And if I increase my taps I will get in trouble boiling down the sap. You can only do so much in a stockpot on a turkey fryer ring. I would have to quit my day job and boil every day. Oh wait that's the plan isn't it?

hey guys i live in rock port and tap here but i also have 55 acres in palermo. just boil on the homemade double oil barrel. I got a gallon of syrup sunday. but then it got cold and there is no sap this week. I've been looking into the sugarbush in Palermo. It does have potential perhaps 150 trees plus some neighbors have some so we will see.

Nice to see some more neighbors here!

A few of my trees get some early sun, more so than the rest of what I have tapped and they are giving me a little bit off and on. Eating dinner now and then off to check and see what's in them before we get whacked with a pretty good bit of snow. Might even have tomorrow off from work to boil it down.

Hey neighbor,

I live in Freedom near Sandy Pond on Smithton Rd. Just tapped 39 trees last week but nothing yet. Have a small sugar house I built last winter and a 2 by 4 old tin leader pan. Made 10 gallons of syrup last year but dont expect that much this year.
You must live on the Goosepecker Ridge.

Hey there neighbor, you would be right. I didn't get much through the week. Maybe today with the rain it will run a little.

Hopefully I won't have this message posted twice. I emptied 27 taps today and got only 10 gallons or so. not great. I don't think I will boil tomorrow I figure I need at least 20 gallons to bother. I know goosepecker ridge . Ive got friends that have a camp lot on Sandy Pond.

Question how do I post the messages you all have at the bottom telling number of taps and Chainsaws? Is that in the Profile or something?

Street name is indeed unique, you ought to hear the silence on the phone when I order something to be shipped. It's either quiet while they wonder if I'm jerking them or they just outright laugh.

I saw your setup today Spango. Had to shoot into Augusta and came home the Greeley Rd. When I got home I emptied all my buckets and I'm boiling right now.
