View Full Version : Redrill tap holes larger for plastic taps?

On trees that I can place two taps, I usually jam some plastic tubing on the end of the metal spiles and run the tubes into containers on the ground. Today, I picked up some plastic spiles at Sugarbush Supplies and some tubing to go with them to replace the previous arrangement. The new spiles are 7/16", as were the old ones, but I could only pound them into the tap-holes a bit less than an inch. They seem pretty secure so I'm not worried about them falling out, but is that in far enough to tap into the sap? They seem big enough that I could redrill the tap-holes with a 1/2" bit to get them to go in further. Is that necessary/advisable?

no, it is not neccesarry or adviseable because all you need to do is seat the tap so sap wont come out. the arrangement you have now is just right

The new taps are seated with no leakage but I don't seem to be getting as much from them as the ones I pulled out. I'll see what tomorrow brings.

if you open the hole to a half inch your gonna bottom your spile out and get nothing, the 7/16 spouts will only go in about a inch with a inch sticking out, leave them be
