What are the major factors and worries of tapping too early? is the main issue with holes drying up? If this is the case, can holes be re-drilled?
What other problems should we be aware of?

hi holes shouldnt dry up unless it get to warm then bacteria will seal off the holes the problem with tapping to early i think is low sugar in the sap, but you get it when you can jim

I'd say you might get less overall yield and a premature end to the season. It may take awhile for the taps to close, but that said, between a tree trying to heal a wound and the bacteria that are introduced by tapping, that's going to slow things down over time though it's going to take more than a few weeks. I personally wouldn't redrill but others may advise you differently.
