In our area the last thing you would want to say is that it is for a sugarhouse because it opens up a whole can of worms. If I were to do it over I would build a garage that has water for a bathroom and a septic. After it was all done I would get the bug to make syrup.

I would go bigger by 4ft. I have a 12 X 16 and by the time I put in my entry door, my 4' sliding door my filter canner a 6' counter top and a small area for wood, I don't have room for a sink. If you have your wood outside, you may be OK, but it is easier to go a little bigger now than later. I told my town office I was building a shed.

Agreed.
Up here building a barn or shed is no big deal - it's agriculture related which helps. I realize some areas or more stringent when it comes to permits and codes. Still, a sugarhouse is a seasonal-use barn. Sometimes it helps to work that angle. It's not a stretch either, so there's no harm in stating it.

Around here you better off saying its an ag structure from the get go. The permit is cheaper and your taxed at a lower rate.
Really take the time to plan out your wood storage. And evap layout. I wish I had made my shack wider and run the evap sideways instead of lengthways.

Thanks Dill, Ive wondered about turning the evaporator sideways but Im trying to stay around 14 x 20, 16 x 20 . Wood storage will be outside accessed thru a slider . Sap tanks outside piped in . This may sound crazy but we're not planning on going above 250 taps so evap size SHOULDN'T change:) . I have 12" square pavers for free so thats the floor . Roof pitch Im thinking pretty steep maybe 10/12 to try to keep moisture running down to eves to inside gutters . Thanks again

Don't say it's a garage. I believe that in most states, it's illegal to have an open flame in a garage, although my local building inspector could not give me a good reason why.

This is NJ ... land of the highest taxes . This " shed " is to store farm equipment in. Thanks again to all who respond.

If you have a chance and other sugarhouses in the area tour them. I'm sure all the owners would be more than happy to give you a look see. See as many as you can, take notes and even pictures, and apply the good ideas to what will work for you. I wish I had plans when I built. I would do alittle, step back, and plan!

The reason is gas. Gas fumes stay low and that is why you can't have a wood stove in a garage. In my area saying it is a barn is a lot easier than trying to build a garage. Good Luck. Lee

OK so today I went to the sawmill and for hemloc board batten siding $815 for 95 1"thick by 10" wide 8' long and 95 battens. Is that a fair price or can anyone reccomend a sawmill less expensive ?Thanks

Thats not a bad price. When I ordered the sides to my sugarhouse (also hemlock rough cut) it was a little more than that.
