I have an old milk strainer and a milk bucket would flat filters be effective if I put them in the stained and filtered into the bucket and so there is no confusion I would be using as much of the filter inside the strainer as possible.

Give it a try. It would be better than not filtering it at all. Just don't push the filter into the strainer- like you would put a coffee filter into the basket/strainer. You need to suspend the filter over/across the strainer- so the syrup can flow through it as easy as possible. Well, it would have to be pushed in a little so it will stay put, and probably clamped on to the rim of the strainer, but not so far that its touching the 'bowl' part of the strainer.

The milk strainer might work but the problem may be that most of your flat filter will be laying against the solid part of the strainer and the only section that will flow well is the center where the holes are. You would only be actually using a small portion of the flat filter for most of the syrup that gets filtered. If you could suspend the flat filter(maybe with several clothes pins) you would get to utilize more of the filter. I think you can get it to work with the number taps you have.

I use the cone filters in a Delaval milk bucket and they roll right down around the neck slick as can be. A piece of baling twine hold them there perfect.
