Has anyone triied to make new arch doors out of heavy plate steel? Did it work? Or was the heat to much for them and they just warp like I think they would thanks for any comments

I had a friend make one out of formed 16 gage steel sheet. I intended it to be made of 12 ga, but there was some miscommunication. Regardless, it is working well. The key is to keep them from getting too hot and I do that by insulating the arch from and door with 1" ceramic blanket.

My arch door is plain mild steel about 1/16" thick. We made it so that we could line the inside with archboard and brick. No signs of wear over the past 2 years.

I built my door out of 3/8 plate, rapped with 2" angle. Used 1.5"x.25" flat bar to make channel for 1" door gasket.Filled center with 3 layers of 1" ceramic blanket and capped it with 12 ga. galvalume . The galvalume lasted 2 years, just replaced it with .25" plate. Very sturdy but heavy. Works well.

If you can, try to find a cast iron stove front, and adapt that to your arch.

We have a home made arch, with cast door. Lighter than heavy steel and works well. Its bolted to the front with insulation between bolt pattern, to form a gasket.
