Do you think there would be any problem with making a float out of aluminum. Got some thin wall al. tube I could cut it and put ends on it it would be so easy.

I think that should be fine. just dont use glue to cap the ends so you don't poisen yourself :(

You might want to think about putting a vent it your float. As the air inside expands it tends to find a way out.
