So I don't have a close sugaring supply place and while I do have an orlon and a flat wood filter many recommend using prefilters. Is there a cheap option ? Like coffee filters or something a feed store would have for say the dairy world ?

I have good feed stores and a Tractor supply nearby...

I may use old flannel this year as my prefilters ( cut into squares ) if nothing else it's should help a bit.

I take off close to syrup on the evap and finish inside. I don't tend to mind if there is a bit of sediment, but people want to actually PAY me for syrup so I figured eliminating the sediment would be nice

order them online they are pretty inexpensive and worth every penny. they will deliver them to your door cheaper then you would pay in gas to go and pick them up.

Here is where I get mine http://www.sugarbushsupplies.com/2011_Catalog/filtertankscanningunits.pdf

If you are going to give syrup away or even sell syrup get real syrup filters.

Coffee filters will work but only for stuff that is not yet syrup. It needs to be thin and hot to make it thru them.
Alot of work also.

You can reuse the felt filters again and again. Even the prefilters and be reused. Just be sure to clean them out really good after each use and hang them to dry.
If they don't dry they will start to grow not very pleasant stuff. I have never tried it but have heard several people here do it, throw them into the washer and run them thru a cycle. You would want to want a cycle before throwing the filters in to rinse it out go. I just hand washed them really good and hung them to dry on one of those collasable clothing racks.

Thanks whalems for the link, I will order a box.;) I was confused by the descriptions of these, the fact that they can be re-used is also a great thing. What I was doing was filtering almost syrup on draw-off through coffee filters, that did not go well so I went to doing it through my orlon filter. I would then filter one more time after it reached syrup through wool filter with the orlon in on top. This took forever and I still had niter issues. The key fact I have figured out from reading everything on this forum was that I was too hot when I bottled, I would bottle right after finishing at the finishing temp so more niter would precip out. I will let it set once done and then re-heat to 190 and filter/bottle. Hopefull I will get something I can sell in clear jars. Of course I could also use plastic jugs and hide it, but that's just not my style
