What happens if your tap holes are too deep? We have been collecting for aboyt 10 days now with 26 taps and have gotten about 40 gallons of sap...does that seem right?

How deep is too deep? My guess is that a deep hole won't affect sap production much but it may affect the health of your trees. A deeper hole is going to produce more injury and allow bacteria etc. to get deeper into the tree as well.
As for how much sap you should have by now, that's almost impossible to determine. That's going to depend on the weather in your area, the size of the trees you're tapping, the species, and even if the same species, some individual trees will produce better than others. Too many variables.

Sounds right, it's been cold! The big runs are still to come. Tapping depth has been covered many times before, but somewhere between 1.5" and 2" deep seems normal. I put a piece of tubing down over my bits to get a consistent 2" deep tap hole.
