Hey folks. I had been needing a replacement for my falling apart garden shed. So I looked on the interenet for DIY barns. I also have a need to have barn space for our goats.
I found some decent examples of outbuildings being built with pallets...yup thats right, pallets! I have to admit, some examples were pretty crappy. But some were really well done. So I was on a mission to build a decent one.
My footprint was 16X20. I leveled land and poured gravel inside of treated forms. Then layed a row of recycled block around the perimeter. Then I started building. I know you all say to build bigger than you plan, but I was limited on space, time and money. I used recycled material as much as I could. So far I have about $800 in it. See the attached pics:

Very! I added vertical 2X4's on the inside just to help keep any "hinging" between the top and bottom rows of pallets from happening. And the OSB sheathing also helps.

So far the only two things I wish I had done was to have a bottome plate between the block and the pallets, and also to center the pallets on the block, and not on the outside edge of the block. I am going to drive rebar down through the ground in the block and fill each hole in the block with cement.

That's pretty impressive for only 800 bucks into it

Looks great!

The only thing I would be worried about here in MI, is the frost heaving the foundation.

If you keep a fresh coat of paint on the OSB every 5-7 years, should last a long time.

Did you have to get a permit for the building and if so did the inspector give you any problems?

Love it, I want to build a woodshed the same way. I have seen this done before and your shack is a great example of recycling stuff to save money and time. My entire shack is made of recycled wood as are I am sure others. Should be a great place to sugar and hope your season goes well !

Nice job recycling used stuff. I am building my shack myself, and started moving equipment from the old shack at the previous owners home. To make a long story short his shack was built 2X4 construction 4 yes four feet on center with similar sheeting that you are using. His old shack has been standing in Northern Michigan for many years and will be for many now that he is gone. Yours will be GREAT!!

Very nice design. Any chance we can get a better view of how you designed the trusses? What type of truss design did you use? I am planning to build a sugar/still shack and am looking at different pallet-built designs . What kind of ventilation system are you using? I can't go much bigger than 8x10 as I intend to move it eventually, 8x12 if I plan to move it myself. Planning for only 20 taps the first few years, until we find a more permanent homestead, with a wood-burning evap.
