Can you go over this procedure with me?

The literature I've read says - determine how much DE you need for your batch to be filtered. Take 1/2 that DE and put it into a pail with 2 or 3 gallons of syrup. Run that syrup into another pail. Check for clarity. If clear, dump that syrup into your batch to be filtered. Dump in the rest of the DE into the batch and commence filtering.

Are most just dumping all the DE in the batch to be filtered, charging the press with the whole batch with the press outlet hose directed back into the batch. And once charged, redirecting the batch outlet hose to your syrup drum? Or should I stick with the literature - it's doable, just more pails:)

I do the same....pump back into supply vessel and after a min or so, put some in a test jar...that stays with each run so at the end of the year I have a test cup with each run in it to see color changes.

I typically use 2 cups of DE per 5 gallons of syrup to be filtered. Maybe a little more at the end of the season. I mix it in one cup at a time. When all is added I turn pump on, recirculate back into orginal vessel for 3 or 4 minutes then transfer hose to my barrel or canner and away she goes..

Thanks guys! Eric, check your PM - I had a question about the hose your using for your press. Anybody else have a link to a website for hose they have been using and like for their press?

Because the syrup's hot, you need to buy the suction hose from a maple supplier...it has a much thicker wall. The discharge hose can be your standard clearing tubing from home depot.

A little off topic, but where can I find a reasonably priced, 2-3' length of stainless pipe/tubing to pump the drums out?

Danno- I have not used the non-transparent hose much for the press, but so far, so good.

Josh- I have some pipe from inside the kegs if you want it- would just need to cut off the tops and weld it up to whatever length you want- it is pretty large diameter though.

I use a 6 inch long section of SS 1/2" pipe hose clamped on the end of hose to suck the syrup out of barrels.

I am using a 2 foot section of 3/4" copper pipe on a piece of milk line hose. It does a decent job of sucking the barrells out.

Thanks for the ideas.

Just a follow up question on sucking the syrup out of the barrels, when using the press to do this it gets very loud and I figure this is just from the cold syrup? This is the first year i have used it to transfer syrup and am hoping it's not time for a new oberdorfer pump yet... Like the rigid pipe and clamp idea for getting the last drops out!
