I tapped yesterday here in Northern CT. With it being almost 50 today and it being cold last night I was expecting great flow today. Anyone else dissapointed? Or is it just my area or CT?

im up in nh and tapped 40 today. 20 early in the morning and 20 about 2 hours ago. the trees were frozen solid so it should take a day to thaw. it ran a little bit up here. but nothing crazy. expecting more tomorrow with it being 40.

It was about 22 last night, and 46 today, and i have 37 tapped and collected at about 4p.m. Only got like 10 gal! along with a few other gal. from the other night, and i collected 15 minutes ago and got another 5 gal so ill have about 16 in the head tank now. I was very disapointed at the run today also. I believe this is caused by a difference in barametric pressure and it caused them to run less. If it rains the barometric pressure makes it run more i believe. I hope to boil soon with 20+ gal soon.

It was pretty cold last night (18 deg. here). The trees never really thawed because of the wind. I collected about 2/3 of what I have been getting. Tomorrow will probably be better.

Not too great here in NW CT either. I was thinking my 3 year old drops were doing me in but the buckets are not much better. I still haven't finished any syrup and have been tapped for 8 days. Hopefully tomorrow night I'll have enough to boil again and can finish a gallon or so.

50 gallons collected yesterday and boiled down to concentrate off 70 taps. I still have more taps to put in. It hit 53 degrees in Cheshire yesterday.

New to Forum and a hobbyist but I hung 30 buckets on 2/1 and the flow seem to be getting stronger in Middlebury.

08-1 tap bucket on stove
09-15 taps with a barrel evaporator
10-same
11-same
12-40 taps & bigger barrel evaporator
Try to keep syruping fun and not a chore!

Another perfect day with less than perfect results! What is up with this? Too much wind, not enough sun?

Almost a carbon copy of yesterday for me. Thought it was going to be a good one, when I left at 6 a.m the sap was running slow but steady. Full moon???

Monday and today have been good to me averaging around 1 gallon per tap. I have a few "perfect" maples that give up more than their share to make up for the slackers.

Understandaby another slow day. Tomorrow is looking more promising. If not I may need to dump sap because I have not had enough to boil yet. Only 9 gallons of sap frpm 25 taps total since Sunday!

Starting Small,
Your comment about dumping sap brings up a question I have too. I work in Norwalk and collect the sap during the 5 day work week (which is a 50 mile round trip from home), store in my tank at home until the weekend boil. Come monday the buckets & bags have a bunch of sap from the weekend.

What do you Maple Traders think, Dump it? or Keep it? During the early season, I'm thinking it's OK to save it and late season, I dump it. Just wondering.

If the sap stays relatively clear, boil it. If it is cloudy white or has an aroma, dump it.

This is my first year so I have no idea if this is good or poor but just for infomation for the rest of you to judge. I have about 30 gallons collected as of last night. I have 10 trees tapped and put them in Monday morning. I plan to start boiling Sat morning.

I also have to say I have two teenage girls and sorry valleyman but they are great collectors and helpers.

I store my sap in insulated coolers but out of the sun. When I collect if the buckets have ice in them I keep the ice chunks until I am ready to boil and then toss the ice. The longest I have stored sap this was is 4 days with the ice and I have yet to have a problem.

Again if the sap turns cloudy dump it, rinse the storage containers and start over.

How did you guys do today? Any run? I got nothing, I figured things are thawing. I am putting in another 10 taps to try and offset my lackluster sap amount so far.

I got less than a 5 gal bucket out of 63 taps. I didn't think it would be great today but I thought there would be more for sure. Scouted for more maples to tap and found a group of 15-20 trees on a neighbors property, heading over for permission in a few. If the sap ever decides to flow for me I'll be in the weeds for sure!

I had a poor day as well....again. The only thing that I can think of is that we have not received any significant rain in a few weeks and maybe that is stopping the flow. I keep saying that tomorrow will be better and then tomorrow comes and I am dissapointed. I have faith though that there will be a season for me! I also tapped an extra 10 taps today so I am in the same boat that if it does decide to run I will have all I can handle. I hope everyone else did well today.

It was to cold, overcast and windy today. Sap hardly flowed, wait till tomorrow and Thursday night when it stays above freezing, if you have vacuum it will result in an incredible run.

Today stunk even on vac. Hoping tomorrow is better. I think there is still the shiny thing that comes out in the sky:-| That will help.

It took a long time to start running today but when it did it ran well. Collected 90 gallons. Tomorrow should be decent.

Night temps have not been cold enough at night here the last few days but the combination of tonight in the low to mid 20's and tomorrow in the upper 30's to 40 should be good for tomorrow. 14 days tapped, 38 taps total and only 50 gallons of sap is not my idea of a good time!

down here for us its been less then stellar sap flows. this week i only collected about 35gals, which stinks for my 100 taps but again they're almost all reds. this season is starting to be a repeat of 2 yrs ago, i really need to get some sugar maples to tap.
