I went out to tap trees yesterday and noticed that one of my taps from last year was leaking pretty good. There was sap all the way down to the base of the tree. The tree is 25+ inches in diameter. There was also a small leak 2 feet above last years tap (perhaps from some bird or animal). Is there a way to seal the tap? This tree has been my best producer the last 2 years.

I would just leave it. Sealing it would do more harm than good and could lead to a diseased tree. Let Mother Nature handle it. I've had a few trees leak before from broken branches. If you're lucky and a birder you might catch a couple of your feathered friends drinking it.

sounds to me you have a crack the length of the tree the wind keeps it open.have a lot of those here now. really do not find them till looking for leaks

Thanks for the response. I will leave it be. Being new at this I wanted to know if there was anything I could do. Sounds like Mother Nature will have to fix it.
