Very common in Vermont to tap your trees along the roadside and in town. A lot of respect for those who take the time to do the hard work. Not sure you'll get the same courtesy in DE.

LOL I have three trees on my side yard right on the road in a fairly urban area.....one of my neighbors is as crazy as me...and gets it but as for the others I bet they are scratching there head and wondering why in heck I have buckets hanging off my trees.
I have seven more to hang but have no trees so I plan on going into the woods a few miles from my home to hang the rest.....hopefully I can find some trees off the road but not so close that it would draw attention.......sounds common in VT but as you said its not really part of the Delaware culture.......must be my Canadian roots..lol
So far I have had no luck with my trees....5 days no sap....last night was the first time it dipped below 32 degrees in at least a week....expecting cold nights for the next week dipping into the low 30's to the to end of the 20's......hope its enough to get the sap running or I will be extremely discouraged. wish me luck....wonder if anyone else taps in Delaware?

Technically I didn't get permission to tap most of the maples I did last year.
I asked my landlord if I could tap her maples and she said yes. Later on in the season she told me they weren't actually on her property but her neighbors. The thing is when the old man who used to own the property built a new fence he built it with the trees on her side of the fence. I seriously doubt he even told this to the current owners, so they probably don't even know the trees are actually theirs

Are either of these maples?
Here in MA folks seem ok if you ask permission and not so "ok" if you don't. At least in my experience. Trespassing is trespassing. :)

i would never think of it and I am getting land use contracts drawn up so i dont end up in court.
I agree with Flat Lander. That is called trespass and theft. If I caught anybody doing that to my trees there would be police involved. The town has a right of way. The trees belong to the land owner.

i have a big problem wihj people that trespass or steal from others, if you do not have nu$% to ask permission then you should be doing something else. how would you feel if someone showed up at your house and took something from you. same thing/no difference.
after saying that i know you guys wre joking right??

The leaf pictured is Sweetgum. Hard to tell the trees with no other info
I'd be ticked off if someone tapped my trees without asking. That said I have permission to tap some of my neighbors but he'd be mad if I did it wothout asking.
We have a creek with lots of flat sandstone. People just stop and jump in the creek and take rocks without asking. I had some piled up to build a bridge abutment and got there and a guy was backing up to take them. They always say"its just rocks" so we say, what if they were in your yard and I drove up and took them. would that be okay? the answer is always no.
just because something is naturally occuring it still belongs to someone.
Well said SevenCreekSap. Why do people feel entitled?

Most people are fine if you ask, actually more than fine especially when you drop off some syrup or invite them over when you are boiling !! I only do this stuff for fun so no way would I trespass !

One answer my father in law was told years ago from a bunch of crazy church people (god put it here on this earth we are allowed to take it) ii CANT say what he told them but they stopped shoveling his gravel into their truck.
