Collection tank vent?

we have a few hundred taps on a hillside gravity tubing system, no vacuum. The mainline tank entrance is fitted tight. Should we install a vent to allow air to escape the tank, or would this have an adverse effect on any natural vacuum. Thanks

I asked the same question in another thread. The answer I got from Dr. Tim and others was yes, vent it, but like you said, at the barrel end, not the opposite end. I'm planning to just drill a second hole in the lid of the barrel for a short piece of 5/16" tubing, then bend it over to keep the rain out.
