Hi all,
I'm doing a research paper for college and chose to do it on the effects of bacteria growth on sap production. I am attending a college in Erie, Pa so how nice of me to pick a topic that no one has a clue about or understands:lol:. I need to be really specific with what causes bacteria growth, its effects, and what the industry has done in the past and what it is doing presently to prevent bacteria's effects. I know about the check-valve which will be a big part of my paper, but I was wondering if anyone knew of some more places for me to get info from. If anyone has data or statistics from their own tests I would be glad to hear them. I have read quite a bit from the Proctor Maple Research Center so now I'm looking for other sources. Any input Dr. Perkins would be great! I know Cornell has done some research, but I can't seem to find their data and analyses. Any input or sources would be much appreciated. Thanks ahead of time! -Calvin

I was reading the section in Garner's The Grafter's Handbook on disinfection of tools and saw the statement that formalin should be strictly avoided, as it caused serious damage even at low concentrations. The reference was a paper published in 1926. What? Yes, 1926. So how did Maple produces ever think paraformaldehyde was an acceptable sanitizing agent?

Hi,Calvin

If you do a google search for micro-organisms of maple sap, several early research links come up including "Microorganisms as a Cause of Premature Stoppage of Sap Flow From Maple Tap Holes", a study published in 1954 by Naghski and Willets.URL looks too long to post here. There is also a link to a much earlier work in several formats re the effect of bacteria on sap color and buddy syrup @ http://www.archive.org/details/microorganismsof167vermuoft

Cornell's library access link is here: http://www.library.cornell.edu/ You should find lots there.

Hope something here helps you. Good Luck and keep us updated on your findings :)
