My goal is to have my act together in time to sugar this year...lol.
Just got my 2X4 dropped flue pan back from the shop from leak repair. Looking to insulate and brick the arch in next couple days, get the arch out in the woods below my house (under construction), pick up some 3/4"line to run up hill from a 275 gal. cage tank by the arch, run some laterals, put together drops, and, oh yeah, throw up some kind of shelter around the arch. If I was further ahead then I am now, I would probably be considering tapping next week, depnding upon the weather. A lot of the commercial guys are up and running but we haven't had good temps up here in N. VT to really get it going....at least, I haven't seen any steam yet from the hills....
Not far now..... ;)
I just wanna make syrup, I would love to make 30 gallons, that would be nice. and not burn my pans being my first year.

Brad, how come you didn't make that last season? Couldn't have asked for a better year for it. I heard of guys on gravity making 0.5gpt. I usually shed that much during the season...usually running ragged by the end, but having fun.
Goal this year is 0.5+ gpt on my 600 tap vac. woods, 1000 taps total including buckets & gravity tubing, and 500 gal of quality product.

2 things. Everyone else was making syrup before my trees finally broke free. we had that great snow pack but a few days before it really started flowing I got rain which produced a wonderful 3 foot ice ring around all the trees so the stump was frozen for the first week...not a whole lot I could so when you were getting 600 gallons of sap a day(and I should have been getting 250 - 300 ) I was getting 50 if I was lucky so I missed about a week. then at the end of the season I ran out of dry wood. SO I hung it up a little early. SO this year so far zero snow pack and I got 11 cords of wood I better not run out!!! I figure I missed out on about 25-30 gallons give or take!!! the begining I couldn't do anything about the end well that happens I guess!!

adk1 I was reading what you haveat the bottom of your page. I hope you have more than the 200 gallon holding tank for your sap. On a good run you will be getting 2 gallons per tap.
nope, that is all I have at the moment! actually probably only holds 175 gallons. these are pretty small trees, 80% of them I would guess to be 8"
How much tank you need also has to do with how soon you can start boiling.

I mostly just want to make enough for my personal use and hopefully enough to sell off to cover equipment costs. My wood was free this year and I'm enjoying myself so I'm not counting labor.

For 2012, will have 100 taps, all on tubing, Vacuum, building a 2 x 6 wi AUF & AOF, new shack, and pans should get here in time. Hope all the time and engineering works!!! Looking for somewhere to buy a little extra luck!!! Just need a little normal weather. Good Luck All!!!

Ditto that. I am at a complete loss as to when to tap. It makes it easier that I'm not ready, but I could make myself ready within a few days. Seems that I re-plumb the the sugarhouse every year.

I'd be delighted to have syrup left over at the end of the year.
I'm down to 2 QUARTS!! left from last year, and I hate rationing.
Hopeing to finally produce 10 gallons.
/got to stop with the giving away and selling nonsense
//until my own supply is secure.
