Looking for suggestions going thru the roof. Metal Best kit about $500.
Significantly cheaper if I go with galvanized pipe and collar. Each have their
own issues. Just looking for suggestions. BTW this is for a 12 x 16 shack and
a 2 x 4 Mason.

I heard someone on here said they used an upsidedown galvanized trash can. Last year I made my own baffles and put ceramic blanket all around the rafters, it worked!

We need to assist in filling out the survey. The research done by UVM Proctor Research directly benefits what we love to do.
Thanks to those who have completed the survey so far....but we need a LOT more participation. Please complete the survey at

you have 7" stack like mine? I went through my metal roof and just used a roof jack on the outside. I cut the hole about 2" wider than Ineeded, but I am also not near any wood or other flammable material..I would say the closest I am is 4"

Yup 7.0" pipe. Shingled roof and rafters are 24" OC. Or, I could go out back wall and up the outside.
You will be ok to just cut your hole in the roof at least 2" wider than the stack. You can add some insulation around it to protect any flammable material. I would not go through the wall you will kill your draft..straighter the better
I used the trash can roofjack, if you do a search on here there are plenty of pics and build thread. Its plenty cheap and looks like R2D2 on the roof.
