We need to assist in filling out the survey. The research done by UVM Proctor Research directly benefits what we love to do.

Thanks to those who have completed the survey so far....but we need a LOT more participation. Please complete the survey at

Almost ready to boil now. In the process of cutting a cupola in the sugar shack now. I will post some pictures of that soon.

Nice work! Did you or are you going to insulate the door?

No we decided not to because the arch itself is so insulated that we are worried we will not have enough heat to heat the sugar shack.
We figured we might get some heat off of the door to help warm the 12' x 20' shack.

looks like that door should handle the heat but its gonna be glowing! are you guys doing air over/under the fire too? I've pushed my arch build to next year (I think) but like what everyone on here is doing. good stuff! let us know how it works and what you learn. hope the sap runs good this year!!!

I just picked up a small but powerful squirrel cage fan. We are thinking about fabricating some sort of manifold underneath the grates.
We will have several holes drilled into tubing or a metal box blowing forced air under the fire. The fan will be mounted underneath the arch behind the firebox so it is out of the way.

Once it is up and running, after a few hours the brick will be hot enough to heat the sugar shack.. Not to mention once you get a good forced air draft you will be opening the door to feed it about every 15 minutes minimum.. I use a stanley squirrel cage fan right in the top center of my fire.. and it will flat out eat the wood.
