has anyone ever thought of tapping for an early run with 5/16" taps, and then when things really get going pull those and ream the hole out to 7/16" for the remainder of the season? Would this essentially bring a fresh hole for the main part of the sugaring season?
everyone says no reaming maple holes!

That's what they make the 1/4" taps for originally. The plan was to tap in the fall with the 1/4" then go back through and drill them to 5/16" and tap in the spring. Doesn't really work though. Once the bacteria is in the tap hole your on the clock. Reeming might get you a week or two but not worth it in the long run.

that is what I have heard.
