View Full Version : Sizing questions - evaporator and equip for 250 taps, expand to about 500 or 600

Right now we have about 80 taps and have plans to have 250 next year and then within another year expand to about 500 (and possibly 600 taps).

We will be getting a new rig (right now on a 2x5 home made one) and will be building a new sugar house.

We're trying to figure out what a good set up would be for doing 250 and then expanding. WE will have power but no heat and probably no water (other than condensation - but we may be able to get water)

Is an efficient 2x6 with adding RO later a good option? Or should we look at a 2x8 or 3x8 or are those overkill?

We don't mind some long days - but don't want to go overboard.

We prefer wood to oil

Any comments or advice?

Probably best if we just go talk to Leader or other similar with the plans and ask the questions.

Thanks

I think you would be fine with a new 2x6. They are rated for 300 trees. You could use a R.o. in the future if you have a power source. I have a older 2x6 G.H. Grimm wood fired and a R.O. and last year I handled about 800 taps.

Look at my signature. Last year I boiled around 3 hr/day and made 400 gallons. I would buy another Mason in a heartbeat.

Thanks guys. 2x6 (and then RO) sounds like a good plan.
