I make mine 30'' That way I have alittle more flexability to go around the tree from year to year.

I go about 30" but like adk1, I'll go 36" for a larger tree.

We normally do 36", sometimes a little longer on big trees. If you're using one-piece disposable spouts where you cut the spout off at the end of each season, longer is better.

Most of ours are 30" but I wish they were 36" to give more flexibility on taphole location year to year.

36". 24" is fine for the first season or two, but within a couple of years you'll wish it was longer when you're reaching around the back of the tree to tap.

Back in 1988 I was making drops 18-24" ,then went to 24" min, then 28", now are 30-36" and probably will make most all of this years 36".
