building a new arch how far should my ramp be from my pan, its a 2x4 , 275 oil tank vertical, gonna have about a 20" fire box or so then a verticle wall up to my ramp that slopes back to my stack

At the highest point on the ramp it should probally be 6" from the bottom of the pan. You have to take in consideration insulation and firebricks. You don't want to cut down draft to the stack. I think there is a rule to tell the gap. I don't know what it is.
Hope this works,
Joey

Here is the formula for the area needed, the 24" measurement is the width of your pan. You can use what ever width you need.

I would say twice the area of your smoke stack. Ex: If your stack is 6", it has an area of 28.26" (3.14 x radius squared), so something like 2.3 inches from the bottom of the pan (28.26 * 2 = 56.52) / 24" wide = 2.33). You'll get both a good draw and heat transfer. This would be the area under the stack with the fire brick installed.

I 'am process of designing a new 2x4 flat pan arch and was wondering what everybodies thoughts were on ,instead of having a ramp coming up from the grates ,what about having a baffle coming from lets say 2in. from the top of the back of the arch down about half way on a 5 - 10 degree angle torwards the front and about 8-10 in away from the grates.I think that this would keep more heat contained under the pan were it is needed instead of going out the stack.

Are there plans anywhere that I could find for someone looking to build their own evaporator. I did the block arch last year but would like something a little bit better this year. Thanks,

Rookie, I don't know why these links won't work from here. If you go back under HOMEMADE MAPLE EQUIPMENT and the thread Building my Own Evaporator on 3-16-2008 thread # 20 gives the link and it works when you click on it there.
