Make sure you get the fire lit and burning good and hot before morning. That way the smoke won't give you away. Oh no, wait a minute, I'm sorry, those are the instructions for operating the still! Never mind.

Very nice! That is a beauty. Is there a way you can keep the shine to it? What kind of metal polish would keep that looking new?

Did Grimm actually build that, or did you do it? That is beautiful! What made you decide to use copper?

That could double as a coffin someday when you're heading to that great maple stand in the sky.

That is piece of artwork. Did you make the hood? I've never seen a copper hood.

Yes, Grimm did make copper Pans at one point. I had a copper preheater and a steamhood made for the flue pan. The tinsmith that made the hood/preheater said that the company stopped making them in the 1980's. The paperwork that came with the rig did not have a date. But the evolution (I think) for pans went from english tin, to copper to stainless. I was interested in excellent heat transfer properties of copper. Efficiency is the name of the game! That half pint ruined me. I struggled too long (6-7 years) with an inefficient rig. 12+ hours for 1-1.5 gallons of syrup wore me out. Prior to that a 55 gal drum and large wash basin. That too wore me out. I hope to get 30-35 gallon per hour evap rate with the copper rig.

Wow! Thats awesome! How long did it take to build it? Let us know what kind of evaporation rate you get.

What do the tags read? Grimm? Waterloo? Did you have the evaporator refurbished or built? Looks nice. Too bad copper was not continued. I would think it would be easier to copper solder (with AQUA solder) rather than ironing tin solder or ss welding. Sure does shine! And how many $$$$$?

Looks great and should boil well!

Remember to use lots of care when firing so as not to hit the bottom of the pan with wood as copper dents easy (done that).

That is one impressive looking rig. Keep us posted of your boil rate. You may be unto something here with the heat transfer.

They read G.H. Grimm "Lightning". I think. I refurbished it. Lots of steele wool and elbow grease and arch repair.

Great looking set up!! Is that a 2x6? I have a 2x6 that I put copper drop tubes in the flue pan and my evaporation rate is around 35-40 gph

It is a 2x6. How do you get the sap out if those tubes?

"Stupid Question Time" - given that:
TIG welding is much more common these days (ie, can't solder is not the reason)
And the "Alzheimer's connection" has been disproven for years as poor labwork contaminating samples
And good heat transfer properties at a much lower price than copper

Why are there (evidently) no aluminum evaporators?

Just a thought/question I had.

That is impressive. Do you know anyone with a similar set up to yours, but stainless? I am curious to see what, if any, boil rate advantage copper has over stainless.

So why don't they make evaporaters with copper anymore?Sound like they boil very well, and could be lead free soldered.
