Does any one use metal bestos pipe threw your roof or no a cheaper way to get the same affect. Thinking of just a section threw the roof and the rest just regular stack

I use regular old galv stack in the sugarhouse. Keeps it a little warm and its a waste of money to use metalbestos inside. but about 2' below where I go through the roof, I transition to metalbestos and just use it for the rest of the stack. Ends up being about 6 or 7 feet of stack. a 3 foot section spanning going through the roof and another 3-4 feet above the roof line.
I did it mainly for safety. Wife would kick my butt if I burned the sugarhouse down.

Also, Twitch- the transition piece that goes from metalbestos to regular stove pipe (called the dripless stovepipe adapter) is pretty expensive. If you wanted to do what you are proposing, it would cost you more than just doing all metalbestos above your roofline I think.
Putting it all together....You would need some galv stack from your evap. Then a stovepipe adapter. A 3 foot metalbestos section to span the roof. another stovepipe adaptor (to transition BACK to regular pipe) and then finally your next leg of regular stack to reach proper stack height and finally a rain cap. Dont forget Roof jack/storm collar too.
If I were a betting man, you will spend way more on your proposal vs. what I explained.
Where in Maine are you? I am about to tear out this exact set up with 6" pipe and re-install it with 8" (new evap has bigger stack diameter). Im in Brunswick.

running 10 inch stack on a 2.5 x8. that makes sense not buying the transitions twice. is the rule 3 times the length of evap or 2 times can't remember.

At least 2x the length of the pan....

Used 10" metalbestos is tough to find, Craigslist or Uncle Henry's may be a good start. Price out some Selkirk metalbestos new, and then see what you can find used.
This is in NH but may be worth the drive if its 1000 dollars worth of pipe.

This is a thread I need to pose some questions too...I need to send the pipe through the roof. My roof is a 6/12 pitch, metal roof. My stack dia is 7". I was hopeing to get a roof jack and use standard chimney stack going through it. Isnt that was these roof jacks are for?

I have some 10" metalbestos sections that will probably fit your needs. A one foot section, an 18" section and a three foot section plus odds & ends for instalation. Also have two 5' sections of galvanized 10" pipe. That would take care of your whole stack.

I think the use of metalbestos is a safety thing... I have a traditional construction style roof, so I used the metalbestos to play it safe. I never worry things are getting too hot. Even with a metal roof, I imagine you have some wooden rafters or supports nearby that are combustible?
Roof jacks do two things. They provide stability but also provide protection from the elements.
It cost me more up front to get metalbestos put up but I never regret it,.
On my old evaporator I used double wall when it went through the roof. I had a 4 foot section going through the flashing and roof. I would go with anything double walled when it goes through the roof. Rather be safe then sorry.
ok..yeah, I will have to be careful whatever I do. I have rafters to deal with. Maybe I will get a local builder to look at it. Would really appreciate some good pics of these roof penetrations!

I'm running doublewall up through the roof also this year. Last year it got HOT up by the peek. Here's a link that has everything you might need. They also have 5" to 24" diameter pipe, and stove pipe adapters. http://www.ventingpipe.com/index.cfm?page=search:browse&all-chimney-pipe=c15659&categoryid=15659&F3309=metalbest
I think what I need is that attic insulation shield or something like that.

Keep looking at craigslist you can pickup what you need fairly reasonable. We don't want you burning down that new sugarhouse/ garage. This way you can have it almost touching the rafter and not worry about. Sometimes you can purchase used metalbestos from stove shops, it not shiny, but who cares. Happy New Year Lee
so I would need like 2 sections of it I guess. also, My pipe is 7" dia, how would this hook into the larger stuff you are talking about

they make a reducer/inlarger in stove pipe to go from 7" to 8". wood stove type stores will have them.

Two things first Lowes sells metalbestos pipe and because the pipes are rather heavy and the staff manhandle them they get small bents in them at the store, I showed the dents to the guy in the plumbing area and he offered a 50% discount. The pipes were still safe and very usable they just had some cosmetic dents, If you don't care how it looks you may be able to save some $$ there. Also the more insulated pipe you use the hotter the inside flue gases stay and the better the draft up the chimney somthing to keep in mind. Any way you do it make sure it's safe.
