Just wondering if anyone runs more than one thermometer in there syrup pan? The reason I am asking is because my new phaneuf pro deluxe syrup pan has two channels and it has a thermometer port in each one. I was thinking it could not hurt anything.

Are they next to each other or on different sides? I suppose of they are on different sides it may be user preference or if you reversed your pans you could keep all your "controls" on one side.

No, they are next to each other. Unfortunately I can not reverse the syrup pan.

one could be used for a draw off probe

I just installed a new Phaneauf. I'm thinking you can reverse your flow if you get creative with the plumbing.

Ya I suppose that I could reverse the flow if I got creative or I could get Patrick to make me up something. I know mine will not be as nice as Patricks!

I have a Phaneuf syrup pan with ports for two themometers. I can reverse my flow. I bought two Leader long probe thermometers for it. Problem is they do not quite reach close enough to the bottom of the pan so they are useless. Anyone have this problem? Can the probes be bent down or will that ruin them?
Thanks
Charlie

How far off the bottom are the tips of the termometers?

Ren - They're a must in my book. Easy to see and read (don't get steamed-up) and won't fall over and break. Gets you in the ballpark and then use your hydrometer to get it to legal syrup.

Well I would have to check again but maybe 2 to 3 inches from bottom. Does not quite reach the liquid. I probably only run the syrup pan about inch and a half deep. I have just been using my old leader thermometer with the wooden handle and then as you say finishing with the hydrometer. Not a big problem but the mounted thermometers would be easier to read and outside of the steam.

You need to buy a theremometer with a longer stem. I know most are designed for 12" but I have seen 18 and 24 inch stemed digitals.

You need a 12''.I tried a 9'' on my phaneuf 4' syrup pan, too short, He emailed me that I need a 12''

Well I think I will stick with just one thermometer this season. I don't have time to rig up something to reverse the flow. I picked up 5" face with 12" stem on Friday and it fits perfectly. Looks like the 9" therm will stay with the old pan.

I have a Leader 2x6 King pan. I bought 2 5" face with 6" stem thermometers. I think the 9" would be too long.

Thanks for everyones input. Sounds like I need a 12" stem as allgreenmaple said. I will have to measure it again to be sure. Looks like the maple guysa have a 12" digital that might work. I may be posting two new 9 inch probe thermometers for sale.

Can you post a picture of the thermometer mounted, showing the inside and outside - I'd like to see how it is positioned.
Thanks

Hey Big Eddy, I would if I could figure out how too. I am trying to do it from my IPad and it does not seem to work like it should. If anybody could direct me on how to do it that would be great. As soon as I figure it out I will post them.

your new phaneauf has 2 thermometer ports because his new design lets you reverse the flow without moving the pan. look at his website to see how to plumb it. at least mine is set up that way. oops...sorry....I forgot that i had already responded to this post.

Our Leader syrup pan has the port for the thermometer only about 3/8 or 1/2" above the bottom of the pan and it goes in parallel to the bottom. I think that's
the intended use of the short stem thermometer. One advantage, you can't vary the immersion depth and hence the accuracy. Patrick's goes in at roughly a 45 deg
angle, so you've got to have the correct lenght and you've got to be careful setting the depth to get consistency.
