Hello i have not had time to research it but what does a piggy back pan do for a person. I'm looking at a flue pan right now and it comes with a piggy back pan as a unit no seperating them they will sell both or none of it due to piggy back pan made for the flue pan. thanks in advance cpmaple

I think some call a Steamaway a piggyback. If I am correct, this should help:

Same idea as Leader's Steamaway but not exactly same design.

The piggyback pan was the original. It took the steam from the flue pan and heated a second flue type pan of sap above it. It also has a series of tubes in the bottom of each flue that blow air into the sap creating an artificial boil. Here is the patent if your interested, it was my family's invention.

The Steamaway is a much more efficient product as it has steam tubes in it as well which transfer virtually all of the heat from the pan below, to the sap above, but both increase boiling rates by as much as 75%.

You didn't mention what the size was, but to give you an idea, the Steamaway on our rig fills a 5 gallon pail almost to the top ( got to carry it out for dumping ) every 5 to 6 minutes. That's a lot of water for the cost of running a 1/3 Hp blower.

They were built and sold by Small Brothers back in the '80s and '90s.
