I am a new member and new to making syrup. I had 11 taps for 2011. Bought a sugar shack contents. Want to tap 120 this next season. When i name my enterprise as you all have so aptly done, do I need to register the name, or trademark the name. If not then whats to stop anyone from using it, once seen.
Thanks for all replies.

You can get a DBA (doing business as)certificate that will protect your name in NY. Not sure of other states.

I registered my business name with the secretary of state in NH. They will prohibit anyone else from using the name, or even something close to the name. Costs $100 a year.

I also registered my name with the State of Maine along with my logo. It cost me $125. each, and it is good for 7 years. They told me they would send me a renewel form prior to it running out.
