well everything else in a sugar house has beem duplicated so i need to know, has anybody been able to build a home made filter press? that WORKS? every time i open up the CDL or leader catalog i keep lookin at the filter press section and my creative wheels start turning.. If anybody made one post it up. I would also like to build a candy machine, just not sure about the motor end of it.. im sure that you need the right rpm motor or it will turn to fast or to slow. any advice?

Well the last guy that I know of that made a filter press was Daryl. But now he sells them. Now if you push syrup through a filter with air I don't believe the term for it is a filter press. One is hydraulic and one is air assist I guess.

I still make the 5" hand filter press. I am working on ways to make some upgrades to the press. :)
I am looking for ideas that the Traders would like added.
Thanks.

If you don't already, make sure you include a stainless steel tray to fit under the plates. I have a hand press that doesn't have any feet on the bottom so it skids all over the place when I'm using it. Some kind of rubber feet or a stick on pad would be great.

How taking a pressure cooker and cuttin a hole in the bottom drill some holes in a washer that is bigger than the hole a bolting the washer to the pressure cooker so you cut a piece of filter and put it in the hold and bolt the washer to the other side of it the use a filtered air supply to pressurize it

As for the home made candy machine, I just collected the essential parts (motor and worm) and will be building one soon. The worm (shaped like a large spring) came from my discarded ice maker tray, from my GE Refrigerator. The motor came from a discarded clothes dryer (I think) - I got it from my neighbor who repairs appliances for a living. Perhaps it came from a washer - I wasn't paying attention.
The motor is 3/4 hp, 60 rpm. I think most candy machines use a 1/2 hp motor, 60 rpm. Now I need to find some stainless steel sheetmetal scraps for the trough, some couplings to join the motor to the worm, and a stainless pot that I'll install a spout of some type.
If/when I get around to building it, I'll document the process and post it here.
Papa, is the spring Stainless?

Yes, it's stainless. It's "shaped" like a spring, but actually is hard, stainless steel.
Check out your ice maker tray - perhaps you have one too.

No icemaker here, but I'm looking for one

A word of warning! Those trays are expensive to replace.
