Is it rusted out or did it get hot and melt the lead solder? How big is the hole? Close to a seam or bend?

Like fixing rust on a car or anything you first have to cut out the rust till you get to clean and solid metal. Patching it with similar metal and using the same type of solder is important. If you try and use a higher temp solder you will melt all surrounding solder. Rust and any type of oxidation will repel solder and will make it impossible to get a good bond of the solder.

These are tough to fix. clean the area and solder it shut may need a small piece of tin as a filler too.
