View Full Version : Volume of sap in the lines? Mystery solved.

Anyone ever been bored enough to try and calculate the liquid volume in say a 5/16 line. I was pretty curious as to just how much or how little sap is in say a run of 100 feet of 5/16 tubing. I bet it is less than you may think looking at a full line and screaming move move....get to the tank.

ok I tried here is the result:

V=3.1416*5/16(squared)*Length

V=3.1416*.0244140625cu inches*1200 inches

V=92.03 cubic inches

92.03 cubic inches = .39 Gallons

.39 Gallons = 49.92 oz

There you go,under 1/2 a gallon of sap in 100 feet of 5/16 tubing completely full.

Did I make a mistake?

Your next assignment will be to calculate pressure drop and flow rate... 8O :wink:

You'd think I had endless time on my hands, but I really don't.

Now we know.

You answer is correct but you did not show where you divided by 4 to get the area of the tubing before multiplying by the length to get the volume. The rusults of the first part of the calculation is in-squared not in-cubbed.

Now how, if you drain it, how much is left by surface tension :?: :lol:

You are 1/2 right the formula is radius (squared) So 5/16 is the diameter, which you first get into decimal form, then divide by 2, then square the result.

I was just looking at the missing information myself.

I'll leave the surface tension to someone else. Time to get welding again, sap will be running soon enough.

You need to know the roughness coefficient to calculate how much is left do to surface tension. :?: :!:
I think it is time it warms up so we can all boil 24/7 then we will be to tired to think

Yeah or at least drinking and smelling sap boil.

Hello-

Diameter was based on true 5/16 or .3125 line. When I have a couple of hours I redo the calculation for all possiblities. :lol:

We really need to get sugaring before we start finding the anabolic makeup of a molecule of steam. LOL

Jerry-

I agree, but I did end up getting my vacuum pump going today. And got the releaser plumbed up, and the transfer pump so at least I can say I did something.
