well im breaking ground on the new location for my sugar house tomarrow, or as it has become known around here as project addiction. the two year old post and beam sugar house will be reassembled on the new slab and have a addition put on so the total size will be 20x24. new arch is in the works and im pretty much sold out of product from last year. everything seems to be coming together so far anyway. anybody else go ah little nutty this summer with this addiction that is worse than crack:)

I paln a little then do it and hope it comes out good in the end. the first year is the biggest learning curve. you figure out what you did wrong and fix it. Every year after that you keep tweeking then grow more!!!!
yup, I can see that already. My "operation" has already grown 3x the size of the original and I ahvent even tapped a tree yet! Started out, Leader-Half pint and 50 tapson sap sacks...Now I have a 2x6 and 170 taps on tubing.....
Started out, gonna boil the half pint beside the garage...now my garage is my sugarhouse... Its unbelieveable.

Boon docker: Have a ball! Hope we can help fuel your fire!
My addiction is fueled by the need to build stuff! Crazy stuff like steam away, restore a evaporator, build a sugar house, build a candy machine and a cream machine and a caner and AFO and AUF and hoods and stacks and stack covers and roof jacks and repair syrup pans, go from 400 buckets to 575 taps on short run tubing, and it seems to go on. After the last 12 years of that I have tapered off a smidgen. Plus maybe the 50 years of making syrup has made me a little wiser?:)
I also really like good syrup! YUM!

Chris

Year one: 2x4 Mason with 50 sap saks….no preheater to speak of, no sap shack, (just the pole shed)
Year two: 75-100 sap saks, a new 14x14 sugar shack, preheater ordered from Jim Schumacher, the addition begins;)

You ordered a preheater! You have the Mason 2x4 right? How is this gonna work?

I think Jim's new v type drip pan preheater would work just fine on a flat pan without a hood. With all those slots cut into it the steam is going to cover the pipes and its a 2x4 flat pan so the sap is going to be exposed to the steam for a good duration. It will sure beat a warming pan with 3,4,5 gallons of sap in it dripping condensation back into the pan. Jim's making one for my 4ft flue pan hood cant wait to scream some sap through that baby.:D

The pre heater jim is making was designed with the lack of hood in mind. The idea is all the steam has to pass thru the slots hitting the copper pipe. blocking the pipes with a solid drip pan doesnt work well unless you have a hood. The pan will also work with very little slope plus it catches the condensate from the cross over tubes. It can be made with fittings at both ends so you can lay it flat for low profile hoods. You only have to slant the preheater tubes for venting.
I am very interested in seeing a picture of this.

yea they are really fun, i would like to get into planes but i just cant see spending 500-800 hundred bucks and then turn it into a lawn dart. atleast if the boat dies in the lake you just paddle out and grab it, not drive it into the ground at 150 mph lol. you can find boats cheap on ebay ready to go just add fuel............be carefull they are as addictive as syrup:D
