Hey, I have a 2x3 evaporator now, and I'm able to have around 70-100 taps this year. I know that will lead to a lot of sugarhouse hours, so I was wondering what size to upgrade to if I choose to. I was thinking a 2x4 drop flue, or a 2x5 or 2x6 drop flue. Let me know.
Thanks..:D
Im going to have over 100 taps this season. I'm going to use a 18"x63". I would say a 2'x4' or 18"x63" would be good for 70 taps. With a 2'x4' you would probaly spend 2 eight hour days a week evaporating.

What is the minimum number of taps for a 2x6 drop flue? Would 70-100 be suitable, or would I need a smaller evaporator? I could getmore taps but this season is looking like 70-100.
A 2'x6' is good for up to 200 taps. If you can get a good deal on a 2'x6' then go for it. I think 70 is the minimum for that size evaporator. I would use a smaller one though. But, if you are going to expand later, then go with a 2'x6'.

If you figure it this way you will be safe. 100 taps, with apprx 1gal a day run per tree. That 100gals a day. a 2x6 conservativly will boil 35-40 galp/hr. so you would have about a 3 hr boil a day with 100 gals of sap a day. That would be my safe estimate. Hope this helps

i have a 2x6 and takes me about 25 gal to start, 70 taps would fit 2x6 great, at 28 to 30 gph thats about 2 to 2.5 hr boil on 70 gal sap.
that should be perfect for me then. with over 120 taps.
