Recently came across some beer kegs from an old resort that I can have for free. Stainless steel and spotless inside. Problem is they are the old Schaeffer ones which have the hole in the side as well as on the top. I am figuring on just welding a blank on the side but cleaning will be tougher. Anyone use this sytle now? Any design tricks to share?

Do they have the valve in the bottom also.I took the valve out and welded on a fitting for a drain. I also welded a piece over the hole in the side. But I also cut a hole in the top to fit a cone filter and welded studs to hang it off of. Works great to filter and and drain from the bottom. Cleans up good with the pressure washer.

Maplewalnut,
You can take the bung out of the side of the keg and install a expanding rubber soft plug available at any auto parts store. I have been doing this for years, filling the keg with your favorite beverage and having it on tap for partys.:D

I use them and they work well. Make sure the bung's in tight and you leave a little air gap for the plug.
I actually scored some Sanke style kegs for a good price last spring and looking forward to using those.

So you guys didnt weld the 'side hole' shut and just use a plug for the top? Just something about storing a keg full of syrup upright with a plug in the side that makes me nervous.

Remember that you will need to clean the tank someday and a big duct brush will fit in the hole. Is the bunk hole thick enough to get some threads in it for a PVC plug
