I cut the joinery for 2 months this summer. Gathered a bunch of friends and family and we put it up in one day.

It's a 12x16 and sits on top of a root cellar that I made with cement block. Half of the frame is white pine, the other half id spruce and balsam fir from my land.

Just wanted to post a few pics and say thank you to those who helped with advice and tips.

Truely an OUTSTANDING JOB!!! Totally special, so much more meaningful that some of the wood came from your land, and also that good friends came to help;)

Thanks for the kind words everybody. Timber framing is definitely so much more than just the actual building...it's the craft, the friends, the raising, the fact that it will stand for 200 years.

I am going to sheath it with 1x10 shiplap. Does anybody have advice for the type of fastener to use? I've heard cement coated or some kind or ring shank nail will be best in green lumber (the posts are all green).

Thanks,
Blair

Blair,
FANTASTIC! I am loving the timber frame look! You did a great job on the sugar house! Cant wait to see the finished product.
I used 2.5 inch galvanized spiral nails for the hemlock siding on our sugar house.
Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures too!
Regards,
Chris

first off your just showing off, thats way to nice to be a sugar house, can I move in?

Looks great i am a carpenter and can appreciate fine craftsmanship.
I would use a stainless steel ring shanked nail, the galvenized will show rust stains over years something about the chemical combo, ( i know this from experience). but you know opinions are like umm... noses everybodys got one :D again looks great

Yes, be careful with the nail selection. We did verticle ceder siding in 1976 and the builder used (I think) aluminum slow spirol nails. Steel nails can cause dark stains from the nailhead down...

Glad to see I'm not the only one with grand plans. I just hope mine comes out that good next summer. Do you have joining experience or are you like me some carpentry experience and figure I can figure it out. Looks awesome and I'd go with the stainless ring shanks also. never any worries about streaking or braking

Thanks for the tip on the nails.

I had no experience. Some mid to mild-upper level carpentry work on my house over the years was all I had. I bought several books by Benson and Sobon in which they both detail the building of a 12x16. I read very carefully. I then took a 2 day workshop in which we built a smal 12x12 shed. Then I went for it!!!!

I triple measured EVERYTHING and I made sure to take my time. I am proud to say it went together without s ingle flaw. I think one of the bents was out of square by three-quarters of an inch....but that was it.

Today I finished the last 16' beam of a porch that's going on the shack. It's actually 2 beams joined together using a joint called the "stop splayed scarf with wedges." A little tricky, but fun stuff!

I am looking to build a sugar shack copying your design and have a few question hope you dont mind? How high did you build your walls and are you setting on cement blocks or round pads .I am thinking 12x14 or 12x16 I will be using rough cut lumber like yours but i will probably use boards on the roof instead of the steel (money is a issue and lumber isnt)any suggestions? My question is to RipTYD THANKS
