Best time I find to work in the woods is in late october and all of november. Just make sure you wear bringht colors

i usualy start as soon as the leaves fall, and most years thats been none too early cause winter always gets me behind my plans due to snow and other stuff

I put up everything except the laterals in Aug. I will do laterals in 2-3 weeks. At 35 taps it really doesn't make much difference, but when you get lots more you will appreciate not needing snowshoes to run the laterals. I know, I tried running lines last Jan. in 4' of snow on the ground. Everything takes longer.

As soon as possible. Then you can get to other sap related items like tank and releaser placement. Then you will also have time to repair any damage to the lines before spring.

I am in the same size operation as the person who started this thread. I only am tapping the same number as you this year. I always set lines up in February when our season starts. I just like to be out in the winter anyway. That way I can plan out my line path in fall and cut excess brush out in the winter.:)

Tanner are you doing a temporary system? Are you removing and replacing every year
If I were putting up 35 taps it would be just before season. Then I would not have to worry about winter damage.

put it when ever you want there is really no perfect time. Its tough in the winter because tubbing doesn't like to stretch as good when its really cold and pulling lines in snow shoes is no picnic either. I like it best is after the bugs calm down a little!!!

they will be permanent but one of them is going to be on like 10 trees that we have to cut to make room for our barn next summer

35 taps = less than 2 rolls of tubing. You could do this on snowshoes up to your wazoo and put in drops and tap in a couple of hours. 35 taps is a do it whenever where ever kind of thing.

Better to get it up early than wait. Know reason to wait to work in the snow unless you are not ready. Dosn't matter weather you are doing one or a thousand nobody with any sense would wait if they have the time now.

I guess I think you are pretty rude to say some of us that are saying to wait till spring have no sense. The point is why put up just 35 taps worth of tubing and chance it getting buried in snow or branches if it can be put up in a couple of hours just before sugaring. I put up my 1000 taps in a week in mid Feb one year. If I were putting up 1000's of taps I would start now, but not 35.

I'm sorry that my post offended you Wiam,it was not meant that way.My point was ,why wait to work in snow(and who knows how much) or other weather when you can get it done now.I'm sure everyone would agree that that there is always lots to do right before sugaring(tapping, setting tanks, vacume pumps etc). So if you can get a job out of the way now then go for it. The time it would take to cut some branches off or put in one or two connectors would be alot less than running the whole line. But everyone can do as he pleases.

Thad, haha...probably wasent the thing to say on a maplesite, but hey, it is what it is!
I bought my 3/4" Black Waterpipe for Tractor Supply. they come in 400' rolls. I got it for $80 I beleive it was per 400'

adk1... you've got to be excited now that you are starting to DO rather than just research but be careful as that's the catch to all this. The more you DO the more to want to do (which of course takes more research). :D
yup, and I am gonna say this right now, next weekend my mainline is going up. I say this becuase that is the only weekend I have between now and hunting season to do it! haha

If your running a high vac system the typical black water pipe is softer and can collapse under vacuum.
I've seen a weak spot (slight kink) on the maple line collapse under high vacuum.
I vote not to put out new line untill its cooler, or they will pull appart in winter.
Install too cold and they will sag too much in summer and more critters can chew on it.

I run high vac on black platic water pipe and never had a collapse problem. First time I heard someone say that. Maybe it was stretched to hard. ADK where in the adirondacks are you? Are you talking this weekend or the weekend after this one? Next weekend statement is misleading. If your close Im coming over.
Not this weekend as it is our annual Father/SOn fishing/camping trip. so it will be the following one. Just prior to the start of bow season! yikes!

I know guys that use black up to 27" with many thousands of taps with no problems of colapse or pull apart.

nope. Dont care to shoot any bears, that is why there are so many of them!

Is it black maple line or the thinner walled water (irrigation type) lines?
They used to have the black irrigation water lines up here and it didn't work too well from what I heard. Someone else told me a similar story from their camp too.
I've seen new and old of the actual maple line that pulls itself apart from season to season.
Might depend on your seasonal temp variation too. Install plastic when its 90 plus out and it pulls apart when its -12 with wind chill. I'd say 6" per 200 feet average.
I've seen the thicker maple lines suck collapsed at slight kinks and at a taped off hole for a sap line connection that was moved.
Just my experience.

i've only used pails to collect but am thinking of trying of doing a few more trees on tubing that would not be fun, on a hill in the snow, so i wanted to know do you have to sanitize your tubing lines from season to season or are they fine, any thing special i should know before I give it a try?
P.S. cut down TEN maple trees? i know you said you have 10 acres but I have a hard time taking down a sappling.:o

I run 26" vac on 100 psi black mainline with no collapse. I have tried running heavy wall 6" lengths of clear tubing between fittings just to see sap running - that has partially collapsed.
Regarding when to run tubing, I like to run it in the dead of winter, but that's just me. Last place I want to be in the heat and bugs of summer is my sugarwoods, Fall is out due to hunting and I'm totally comfortable running line in below freezing, snowy days.
