Hey fellow Maple Heads! I just picked this up. It is a jacketed vessel that can be used to can and bottle syrup and various products we make with it. It is stainless and has a drain spout for the liquid in the bottom. It was designed to use oil or water in the jacket. Does anyone see an issue with using oil in a food related application? Would it flavor the syrup or something? Is there an oil that would be considered "food grade" that may be better to use? It is not under pressure so water would only be useful for about 190F. The oil will get up to 240F.

uhm.........................first of all why would you ever consider using oil? Second, why is water only "good up to 190"

That is one heck of a bottler. You could have it feed several stations so that several people could be bottleing at the same time.

Us oil?? Not sure why you would want to. 1st thing would be $$$, then how often would you have to change it out. Oil breaks down with heating. How would you then get rid of it. Do you know any one how makes bio-diesel.

I personnally see why water alone would not be able to heat your syrup.

Does this have a built in heater or will you be required to have a seperate heater for the water?

Nice find though, for me that would make a nice sap storage tank.

They do make food grade oil:rolleyes: I would use oil because it wont freeze. wont evaporate. wont steam away over time. Some oils expand less than water. I would use a form of oil they use in the small electric space heaters but FG. Plus at low heat under 250 degrees why would oil go bad or spoil? Plus if you use food grade oil and it ever did leak into the food product you would see it in your first bottle. Food grade oil wont hurt you unless you over consume it and trust me you will expel it from your body quicker than................well real quick

Plus after the season you could celebrate by filling with the dregs from evap and use it as a hot tub. Heck invite Jim over for his honeymoon and let him soak his stiff................STFUC

Wow I wonder how long it would take to heat up 100 gallons of syrup to temp? Ahhhh heck who cares you can bulk pack 100 gallons at a time with that baby lol.

I drained 30 gallons of very clean hydraulic fluid-like oil out of it. I'm going to clean the whole thing down with some degreaser. Before I fill it back up, meanwhile research pro's and con's of using water or oil.

The fella I bought it from told me it took 6 hours to bring water to a boil. So I'm estimating 4 hours to heat 50 gallons of syrup to 190F.
