Same here. Remove the dip tube. I also put a small vent filter on as they cool since it is under vacuum. Dont want them sucking in 'dirty air'

Yes, But I didn't like packing with a container that would not hold vacuum. Thus I converted them. I removed both quick disconnects, flipped the lid over, sealed the leaks by using gaskets and I now have vacuum holding containers. If interested how, I can get some pictures and post.
Before converting I had several get mold on the syrup because thay would suck in air and not hold a vacuum seal.
Mapleflats, that is info I think I am looking for. Had not figured how to seal so it would keep as in a drum. It would be great if you could post pics/instructions.

We used them for the first time this year. We only for transport but found them to be handy and easy to move. I also removed the drop tube.

I'll get some pics and do up a description of the steps in a week or 2. Too busy til then unless I get a rainday where I can't work outside. My excavator has a roof but it does not do a very good job of keeping me dry. Besides that, digging in the rain presents other problems.
If I haven't posted this by 9/1 PM me a reminder.

Thanks, there is no hurry

Sorry to dredge up an oldie, but was looking at Cornelius kegs for storage.
Maple Flats, did you ever post those instructions, somewhere else perhaps?

I would also like to see photos of this storage process and how to modify the kegs. I have several of these just laying around the house.

Possibly,
A good day for me is between 5 and 10 gallons drawn off. The Cornelius kegs hold something around 5 gallons, figured I can bottle anything over that or pack in gallon size glass. At a quart per tap on gravity I should come in around 75 gallons this year (probably closer to 60, but I’m being optimistic)…don’t need that much glass hanging around, and I’d prefer not mixing runs or grades, then there is the weight factor.
The kegs seem like a good answer. They have the right capacity, are reusable, food grade, don’t take up much room, and won’t weigh a ton when full.
The trick is how to make them work.
How do you empty them without making a mess? I have not tried. Just wondering

I didn't get the pictures yet, I forgot to be honest. I will try this week. Once I get the pictures I'll also be listing some for sale. I now pack in larger bbls, all SS and no longer use the little kegs. I now have retail sales large enough that I do up 40 gal at a time and don't just pack 5 or 10 gal in a batch.
To empty them, I just hold by the top handle and lift from the bottom, to dump them into my canner. No that I do bigger batches I made a suction tube and use the filter press pump to move syrup to the finisher, heat, then filter it to the canner and finally can it.

Reviving this oooooold thread to see if anyone has experience sealing corny kegs so they hold vacuum for sap storage? Looks like some tried it but didn't see any details about how to seal the quick release valves and lid. Thanks in advance!
