What type of pumps are used for the feed pump on RO's? The old one on mine is just a cast iron 2 stage shallow well pump. I want to go with a stainless pump. Do they use a booster type pump? Any info will be appreciated.

The feed pump on my RO is a Grundfos, 1h.p.- 220v motor, 1" inlet and outlet, with a stainless steel pump housing on it. Nothing special- any plumbing supply could get you a similar pump. Search the web too.

Does the feed pump run continuously whenever the RO is running?

my system has a 1 Hp Grunfoss feed and 3 Hp high pressure. They both run all the time. There is a pressure switch on the feed pump that you over-ride to start the system. It's set at about 20 psi. Once that pressure is reached I wait for the feed pump to push the air out of the system and out of the membranes ... that takes about5 minutes. Then fire up the high pressure pump. On the DOW membrane instructions they tell you to apply pressure gradually and to bleed the air out before cranking up the pressure. When you run out of sap on the raw feed tank, the feed pump runs dry and the pressure drops shutting down the system automatically.
