howden86,
Sounds like one of those loaded questions that you are afraid to answer?
I always worry about dry leaves in the woods. But so far I have not set anything on fire. Fingers are crossed and knocking on wood and the insurance bill is paid. Hey we are talking about a raging inferno in the arch, spuing sparks and stuff. I like the idea of a screen (spark arrestor) I would like to get some more information on this if any one has used one. There was a string going on potential fire hazards, a month ago.

A friend of mine put out 9 grass fires in 2004. He taps 750 buckets,
uses horses and sugar camp is way in bush. Last year he did not catch
the last one, lost his camp, evaporator,30 cords of dry cedar, a few
maple trees and equipment. I think the biggest loss was his desire to
rebuild and keep on sugaring after doing it for over 30 years.Be careful.

That 1/4" construction mesh works great,,just fold it over the stack base and put the stack on top of it,,I looked the other day when I was brushing the flues and it still looks new.

Parker, are you talking about what they call hardware cloth? in 1/4" mesh or something else. I want to use it, whatever works. I have never had a grass or leaf fire nor do I want one.

Might be the same stuff,,it is a fairly heavy galvinized wire mesh that comes in a roll,,like what you put on the bottom of a screen door or what some people use to screen sand,,Ill look next time I am at the hardwear store for the proper name.

I have the 1/4" hardware cloth on my stack and if it wasn't for the neighbor I would have burned my sugar bush down. I am bit more carful when there is no snow and I water the woods down afew times during the boiling time.

We've beaten out a few small fires with a broom over the years. Always tends to be at the end of the season and has never gotten out of control (***knock on wood***).
