View Full Version : The Mangy Moose Construction begins….

After a bit of a wait, the slab is finally poured, 1 row of blocks laid, front and side apron on…now the real work begins. Shack will be 14x14 for a Mason 2x4. Front door is 6' wide, side door is 32" wide. We plan on using rough cut pine from a local mill for the siding, board and batten style. 12/12 pitch on roof, side shed roof for the side apron for wood storage. We would really like to attempt a post and beam frame, not sure if that will happen. May be a bit out of our comfort zone. Our son, USMC SGT will be home on leave in a few weeks, and he plans to help. Should be a neat memory for all of us.

Keep us up to date with photos! I love to watch the progress of the new houses and ideas folks come up with. Your not that far away as the crow flies.
It was all the posts of photos that allowed me the ideas to build one last year.

Thanks Haynes! If I didn't keep a close eye on him, he would try to use some "non lethal weapon" for something! LOL:D

I will give you this link to Building materials outlet. It is about a mile from my house. They have over 80,000 sq feet of cabinets, windows, doors, trim, etc, much of it new, returns from contractors that they sell on site and they have weekly on-line auctions to blow the real big overages out.
I bought all my windows and cabinets there for very little. Four windows were about 150.00, 55.00 for all the cabinets. Even gave some away as they were only 5 bucks apiece.
I just put in a hunk of granite counter top I got for 29.00. Adds a little charm to the sugar shack.
You may find something you like. It could be worth the trip.

No kidding, the construction crew had to take a few weeks off due to Jeremy getting a Musky bite while trying to land a nice bass while fishing and tubing with the family on the Namakagon River over the 4th. He even had the stitches and bites to prove it!

So the construction continues, Tim was waiting for son Ben to arrive. Strict instructions……no more work Dad until I get there!

Thank Goodness too! Our DEBATE? is now that we built a stick built frame, ( I KNEW there was a reason that I really wanted to build a timberframe) darnit:rolleyes: Mr. Mangy Moose, aka, Tim wants to put the rough sawn siding up HORIZONTALLY? WHAT I say, no way, it HAS to go up vertically! Debating went on all evening.

Many of you probably know why this is a problem, we now have to put a gazillion horizontal pieces between the studs to nail the siding to. Well, Tim does NOT want to do that, he is fighting for the horizontal siding. Lucky for me, son Ben says Dad, you have to do it the RIGHT WAY! Thank GOD!!! All I really had to do to convince Tim is to show him ALL of the images that I've saved.

The Drama continues……………..;)

If your talking about board and batten, definatly needs to go verticle. IF you dont, when the siding gets wet from heavy rains (slightly sideways) the water isnt gonna run down along the batten.

Unless the lumber is specifically milled for horizontal siding, just board and batten is installed vertical. Primed and painted is even better but not necessary.

have the saw mill do a ship lap on all the boards then no batten needed right? verticle install of course.

Luckily son Ben and I were able to convince the "one who must be told what to do" (lol) that the siding should be hung Vertically. It looks great. Still have the roof rafters and battens to do. New pics up.

Do you have an outdoor sap storage tank, or a indoor one that is in the rafters so you can pump up to it? What would you guys recomend for small amts. of sap storage, like 50 gal? Thinking of adding a tank up high so it will just gravity feed to the preheater pan. :?:

Looking at the bite. In my area we use something for bait like a lure or live bait rather than our arm. That looks nasty.
The sugarhouse looks real nice. Keep it coming.

We are planning on putting a tank outside, elevated for sap flow to preheater, (yet to be determined)

Hey Paddy Mountain, does the shack look a bit familiar? Your shack of all the shack pics that I looked at is what we knew would work for us in our space and area. Thanks!!!

Well I liked your label so much I used the same template and my photo and script. Also tried a design from vista print. And ordered a circular label from then for kicks. But I can tell myownlabel.com has the best selection.

Whatda mean Paddy Mountains shack--whoa I am wallowing in my tears!

Hey Paddy if you need another coffee maker for parts let me know you can have mine! If you pay the shipping----

Yes you can insert a photo. Go to your label template and you will see from the instructions on the left how to do it. Any template with a camera underit will allow a photo to be inserted.
When I get mine back I will post for you.

We finally got the roof work done! Working on that cupola was a bear. Still have to get the mechanism figured out to open and close doors. Next is the stack installation and rebricking of the evaporator.

Hey Paddymountain, your shack was my inspiration! I WOULD LOVE a filter press, but the cost seems extreme for my 50-100 taps. and the bottler/canner I think that I have a pretty good system that works for me, so I will pass on that for now. But Thank YOU!

Well, after 14 months or so….we are 99.9% done with the shack. Added a front porch, finished all of the battens. Still some minor finishing touches to go, nothing big, just a few Dietz lanterns and a moose bell to go.

Gramma Cindy, looks as good as a summer kitchen, rather than a sugarshack. Are those pet deer in front?I would be watching for sap buckets knocked off the trees for a drink of sap from them.
