I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but do you folks label your bottles "refrigerate after opening"?

I had some labels made per regs, but it mentioned nothing of this and is not included on the label. I haven't seen it on any of the labels around here either.

But, I had one person open a bottle, and stick it in the cupboard. It went stringy after a month or two and they pitched it.

Should it be included? Do I need to give an instruction manual with each bottle or what? I want people to be happy with the syrup and I don't want them fearing the maple.

I don't know labeling laws as far as that is concerned but in my opinion it would common courtesy to put it on the labels. It comes on the pre labeled bottles and I make my own labels for maple cream and I put on it "keep refridgerated". People just don't know. if you put cream in the cabinet its just not going to last very long!

It would probably be a very good idea. I just make 5 to 15 gallons per Season and give most of it to Family and Friends and although I do not label my jars - I do tell them to refrigerate after opening. When I first made syrup years ago - I had syrup go bad because I didn't know any better. Maple Syrup is another pure food product and although refridgeration will extend the shelf life - it does not last forever as some pretend syrups might. ----

well to my knowledge all VT containers (like plastic ones) have it printed right on the side "refrigerate after opening" now glass I'm not sure, and most likely metal containers do.

My jugs all say it. To me it is a must. With out saying it you are hurting your own image. In your case the person who put it in the cupboard reported it to you so you had the chance to tell them after but someone else might just think your syrup is poor quality. Also you might be open to having to reimburse someone for the loss since it was not labeled as such

I'm using glass bottles and they're not marked. But, I'm thiking it's a good idea. I just have to figure out how to squeeze all that onto one label that is already typed full.

I tell everyone to refrigerate after opening, but I think most are used to store bought fake maple and ignore the warning. We refrigerate our fake maple syrup too though, and it states on the label to do so.

Thanks!

Flat Lander,
This past weekend I actually did walk out of resturant after ordering pancakes, but went to truck and grabbed a bottle of maple and came back in and used it. Lots of strange looks from people. Always have a stash with you, you never know when you might need it.

om occasion the wife and I have done that, she brings it in in her pocket book, and yes you do get some strange looks. I actually made a contact with a restuarant owner out in phx because I did that. now just have to make more syrup to send to them

We buy a roll of 1000 " refridge after opening ' stickers from current and place on our glass bottles and maple leaf bottles. Saves a lot of explaining later as to why it is moldy!

our two cents
