Im not really sure where this goes but since Im putting up tubing when I get them I figured Id post it here. In the past week me and my girlfriend have both gotten a tick while working in the woods. We tried the tick and bug repelent stuff after the first one but after having one on me tonight I don't think it works haha. Has anybody else been having a problem with this and if so anything else I can try to stop getting them. Id really hate to stop going to the woods due to ticks but I don't really want to get sick due to them either.

I believe the answer is in a song by Brad Paisley, "Ticks".

They are really bad this year. I had five on me Saturday after one walk around the yard. I watched one go right up my sock to the lip of it and right down inside the sock. They seem really fast this year, too. Maybe they are just extra hungry.

Deet is supposed to repel them, but the only sure-fire method that works for me is a head-to-toe tick check when I come inside. Be careful with the clothes too. Sometimes they hang out on them and crawl off of them after you toss them. After I pulled off four (they hadn't bit yet), I forgot my shirt in the bathroom that night. They next day the fifth came crawling out of it along the floor.

permethrin is the only thing effective against ticks. You spray it on your clothes, wait four house to dry and the clothes are protected for up to 6 weeks even including normal clothes washings.

We have a ton of mice which dirctly effects the tons of ticks this year. I think it was the deep snow pack for 3 months. The mice just kept mating with no thread of preditors. the fox and coyote populations are down around my house fox are coming back up but when the coyotes go up the fox go back down. but lots of owls owls too. (and mouse traps I caught 12 so far... the cat 4 ;))

Dicks Sporting goods
SAWYER just like post above has Permethrin, PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS, DO NOT SPRAY CLOTHING WHILE WEARING IT!!!!!!!!! IT BURNS:cry:

I love to walk into woods just looking for ticks, once they find you and start crawling up your leg just stand there and watch them. It takes about 5 seconds and they will start to do the funky dance and then back flip off your leg to die:lol:. Anything winged that lands on you is dead when landing so you will have little winged creatures along for ride but dont get off until you flick them:lol:

I have heard of a product made for horses you can buy at tractor supply that works really well also, never have tried it but friend has he swears by it.

I work in the ER and have seen more embedded tics in the last two weeks than all of last year I think. The mice really do play a big role up here. I would not depend on any topicals although some repellents do seem to help. The best plan is a head to toe body check. Don't forget scalp checks as they like hairlines pretty well. When removing a partially embedded tick, there is at least some strong circumstantial evidence that grasping them with tweezers and turning them counter clockwise while applying slight traction works best. Has something to do with how they dig themselves in and the design of their probiscus. They are going to be a big nuisance while in the woods for sure. This is their most active time though and I think that come summer they will taper off a bit. Let's hope anyway.

I have fad so many of these creatures on me it"s past counting. The best thing is to were tight fitting cloths tied at the ankles and wrist so they don't get in. Removing the ticks is real simple. Get an onitment cream double or triple or jest jelly and cover the tick. It will soon not be able to breath and will back out. Works every time for me and best on small children who may be scared of someone pulling the critter out. When done place a bandaid with onitment on it oveer the bite. works great here

Well if you want to go in the wood and have no ticks when you come out you have to try the old Marine Corps trick... First you need a book of matches, Second eat three match heads for breakfast, lunch and dinner the day before and the day of working in the woods... When you sweat the sulfur comes out your poors and the ticks do not like it you can lay in a nest of ticks and they will crawl away from you...

I have done this for years, and it works great...

its been said when you do this kind of removal or use a flame or heat source on end of tick the tick gets all nerved up and actually regeratate the meal they are having and puke it back into your body along with the Spiracheta? virus. There is a tool made for both large and small ticks we picked ours up at the local small vet business. It looks like a small v or large V tool and you slip it around the tick and spin it counter clock wise just like a previous poster said.
The tool is called
"Tick Twister"
its made in France, here is the web site

Check for tics completely. I had one last year and had to be treated with some drug that made it impossible for me to be in the sun. It felt like I was too close to the open evaporator door as soon as the sun hit. After changing prescriptions it took several days still before I could work in the sun. Not fun since I usually work outdoors about 364 days a year. Now I check closely every day.

I have heard of those side effects. This drug I have seen given for lyme, even gave it to my dog when she tested positive.

I hopes this helps me quit smoking to! Sounds far enough out that it might just work and it coming from a leather neck. Thanks Cpl.

You know I had never really encountered any ticks before till last Fall when I got a big 8 pt buck I went to pick up the cape to bring to a taxidermist and they had put it in a clear trash bag well by the time I got to the taxidermist I had 3 ticks crwlinng around on the head inside the bag. then last week for the first time I had one crawling on me behind my ear before I got him off the little bugger had bit me. So now getting a little nervous about trying to pick up wood. That lyme desease is a bad thing if one gets it.

I only smoked for four years and that was the four I was in the Marine Corps... I know it works, I have used this method from the day it was tought to us until present and I have done an "I am up they see me and I am down right smake on top of a nest of ticks and they crawed anywhere but where I was... Everyone in my platoon never had ticks while we were in the field and other platoons were not so lucky as they were not tought this trick from our former recon marine platoon SGT...

ticks don't drop from a dead deer until the blood goes cold then they will start falling off. What we need is a few weeks of -30 with no snow on ground to let frost get down deep. I'v been told if frost still in ground when they start to come out they can't live through it so I'm told.
