I purchased a Gast 3040 (oilless version) from Ebay. What size electric motor should I run with this pump? I will have 300-450 taps on it for now but plan on expanding in the future. Also, what if I decided to go with a gas motor? 5.5 hp? I am probably going to run this with an electric releaser.

I have this pump as a backup in the garage just incase. It has a 3hp electric motor on it but its the lubricated version. I love gast pumps I run a 1550 oilless and a larger lubricated one will go online this spring as well. These pumps dont overheat and will pull alot higher than 20 inches of vac. Spec sheet from Gast says the 3040 non-lubricated one should have a 2hp electric motor on it. The 1550 I have has a 2hp motor on it with no problems so it should do you fine. Oh it also says to run it at around 1300 rpms but I have all mine at 1750..

Dont size the motor to the woods but to what the manufacture says to use . Now if the pump calls for a 2 HP and you put a 5 HP on it you wont hurt it. BUT dont put a 3550 RPM on a pump that calls for a 1725 HP. If you go with Gas you can throttle it down or better yet get one with a Governor.

or change pulley ratios. But he did ask what size elecric motor. And yes the more hp wont hurt a thing actually it would be better. No worries about overheating motor and less strain on the motor will gain longevity and less strain will draw less amps which is a good thing.
