In less than four months, the Canadian organic standard will apply from coast to coast. Barring a reversal, all organic producers in Quebec must comply.
However, the process of harmonization between the Canadian standard and the Quebec standard is not yet complete. Some points remain in dispute. In this context, many organic producers express their concerns. A brief overview of the main issues in dispute. .
Maple syrup production
The specifications of Quebec, taken by federal regulations, includes several specific requirements for maple syrup production, including tapping, equipment used, and forest management. The standards in the United States does not cover all these aspects and are therefore less stringent than Canadian standards. Currently, the agreement on the equivalence of Canada-EU does not mention that the organic maple syrup from the United States must meet the requirements of Canadian standards. The equivalency agreement thus creates unfair competition for producers in Quebec
Other elements will occur in the focus on organic standards. The Government of Canada is currently negotiating the renewal of the equivalence of organic standards with the U.S. government. Such discussions are also underway with the European Union.
In the context of harmonization of standards where a few points remain in dispute, the FABQ wishes to claim an extension of the equivalence of the Quebec standard with that of Canada. This status quo will finalize the harmonization of standards to the satisfaction of organic producers in Quebec. Moreover, this process would provide greater clarity on changes to facilities and cultural practices

Thanks CBOYER.
Since it's about organic produced syrup I don't have to worry about it, but it's good to have the info anyways.
