Mechanical Releaser question

A question for those who have a mechanical releaser.

The single or double vertical tank releasers have a small horizontal tank. Does sap feed into this tank and/or is it used as a vacuum reservoir while the large tank is dumping?

Yes, you got it. There is a rubber flapper inside the vertical tank that closes when the vertical tank dumps, this allows the horizontal tank to hold vacuum and catch the sap until the releaser closes and the vacuum to even out. Once the vacuum starts to pull, the rubber flapper opens on the horizontal tank.

I imagine they have some sort of valving that transfers vacuum from the large tank to the small tank while it is dumping? Or, do they just shut off the vacuum when the float comes up? I guess this would require the float to be on a rod with an upper and lower limit?
