It's finally go time here, with a freeze every night but one and in the high 30's to middle 40's forecasted for the next ten days. If it does what is forecasted, we will have 3 more weeks of sugaring. Ten days will put us in the full moon cycle, and it most always freezes around the full moon, we'll see.

It looks to be a huge year for maple production this year as the Canadians season usually go along with whatever we do here high in the mountains of Vermont.

So I have a basic question, I am going to pull my taps tomorrow, but is the best way to get them out of the tree by using pliers? Or is there some "industry" way of doing it?

To pull the 5/16 spouts we use a flat pry bar(wonder bar). Take a file and widen the v a little on one end. It works great.

Looks to be the last gathering today. I'm pulling the buckets at the same time. Probably get to the tubing sometime next week.

Had a pretty decent season. 140 gallons + from 625 taps.

Hope everyone did well!

This may be it....unless the temps drop back down to 32 for a stretch. Still lots of snow in the woods so we'll see.

We pulled the buckets today (4/12), washed them and put away for another year. The tubing is still running - 1st year with the check valves

My pumps are off and staying off. I am throwing in the towel. 1650 gallons made. Not where i wanted to be at gallons made but the sugar was just so low. My average test all season was 1.3% to 1.4%.1% the last 2 weeks. Pretty pathetic. I guess its not bad for my rookie season. Nowhere to go but up.

How many gallons did you make Jeff? I went through Cuttingsville today and I saw a new sugarhouse across the road from John C. Stewart and sn, is that Mark Stewarts operation? Brought 17 barrells over to Bascoms today. Needed to pay some bills.

Last Thursday night I boiled some really ropey stuff that wouldn't filter or draw off well and thought I was done. Yesterday and today it's running o.k. and the sap has cleared up. Not sure if I'll get enough for another boil or not because I would have to empty the evaporator and clean first to get rid of the snot... Anyone else seeing the same thing?

Yup.
We made 2 drums of syrup that was dark amber from cloudy sap and then are back to clear sap and nice medium amber.

that is marks ss. and they are still going. sap did clear here. but i will be done pulling taps today. very strange to be pulling taps watching sap run so hard and snow up to my knees in some places.but syrup would not come up to density.
